This Sickness #1 - This Sickness

from Voices In My Head - Disc 2 by Steve Smart Poetry & Music

about

Waaay back in 2009 I put together a show with Carmen Main called 'This Sickness' for the Overload Poetry Festival. The idea was to get a little twisted, put the minds back in the gutter where they belong. I think what happened was that I pulled Carmen towards the horror/sex/horror/sex thing and she kind of pulled me back a bit into a more reflective space. I don't know that the show completely worked, we only did it that once, but it was fun to write. Totally fun. It was also one of the first shows, along with 'Wild Optimist', that I recorded the soundtrack for. The poems I have a pretty big ego about but having people hear the soundtrack... I'm not a musician, that's fucking terrifying to me.

For the 'Voices' album I went back and reworked the soundtrack to fit just my poems, as there were tracks that covered both mine and Carmen's. A little tweaking and here we are.

The text poems are here - www.stevesmartpoetry.com/this-sickness-set-of-poems-coming.html

For this particular track I'd like to point out that the music box sound, which is also used later in the set, is actually my sister Kiri's childhood music box. I recorded the soundtrack in her old bedroom at my Mum and Dad's house in Blackburn South using weird toys from a local $2 Ship and vaious bits and pieces I found around the house.
