about

As it stands I have no photographic or filmic evidence that this show ever happened. All I have is one document that tells me a wrote something, and if my memory is not entirely faulty I performed it.

No wait! I have the boxer shorts too! The boxer shorts I bought in Adelaide the day of the gig. They have 'All Hail The Sex God' across the front, they're shiny and blue and silver. I have those, and that means I didn't dream it.

I should go back to the beginning, I've skipped everything.

Amelia Walker asked me to do a show in Adelaide to celebrate Love Poetry Hate Racism 2009, a global poetic movement started by dear friends of ours in Belfast. The show was a hybrid poetry reading, debate and wrestling match called something like the Poet Beetle Puddle Battle. I can't quite recall. We were very drunk that night. For some reason the federal government had just given everyone in the country, including Centrelink recipients, a bunch of money, so we were all drinking shots.

Anyway, the brief was to come up with a wrestling name, character and costume, and to write a debate speech on the subject of 'Does poetry need to do anything?'. I was on the negative side, poetry doesn't need to do anything. So I created this outrageous character and gave hime, for a name, the Spanish phrase for poetry slut. He had the boxer shorts, a way too tight t-shirt, a feather boa, a set of fluffy red handcuffs and a pink cowboy hat. And a filthy mouth.

The debate was fucking mayhem, glasses were broken, people were handcuffed together, half the audience walked out in disgust. Then we all got shit-faced and I don't remember much after that.

And I still have no idea what any of it had to do with 'Love Poetry Hate Racism'.
