A House In Ruined Repose

from Voices In My Head - Disc 2 by Steve Smart Poetry & Music

/

about

This poem was inspired by a young artist called Sachja Haas, whose work I first saw at an exhibition at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. It's an ekphrastic piece, which means the poem is based directly on another artwork. This is one of the two stand alone poems on Voices In My Head, with Burning Man on the first disc.

What else can I tell you?

I guess this was an attempt to do something less narrative driven, something where the image was more important, and for the track obviously the atmosphere with the voice and soundscape was key for me. It's dark but not negative, I hope.

Oh, it's a form poem too. I started writing form poetry when Nick and I were working on Versificator Regis, which I'd not done before. One of the forms that I was most attracted to was the sestina, which this is. I like the repetition of words, being able to elicit different meaning from the same words. Repetiton without being repetetive, if it's done properly. It's not going for the big crowd pleasing thing, it's quieter, more reflective.
