about

This album was a long time coming. Sandy had plans for it over a decade ago, only she was going to release it as a live bootleg of my love poems and not tell me. Not sure how she planned to launch a CD of my poems without telling me, but she'd have figured something out. Finally I sat down and recorded it in early 2011. Not quite a decade after we first talked about it. Nearly seven years after she passed away. Not all the poems are for her, and not all the poems are totally depressing either! We were nothing if not hilarious, at least to ourselves.

The album I guess is a collection of poems dedicated to people who have affected me in oh so many ways.

Now Sandy was clearly biased since all the love poems I was writing at that time were for her, and I thought it was... I was flattered that she thought other people would like them but I was very sceptical. My stock in trade was, some would say still is, the frustrated rant. Hopefully over the years I've evolved as a poet. No, I definitely have. Poetry is a more esoteric version of everything else you could occupy your life with; if you want to get better then you have to work at it. Occasionally someone comes along who just seems to have been born with the gift, fully refined, but I'd say those people work hard at it too. Poetry should never allow for complacency. The best poets know they can always get better.

That was a bit of a tangent. My point is I'm glad she suggeted it, but I'm also glad I waited, I think it's better for that. Strange though that most of the poems that are about Sandy, or that she... appears in, were written after she died. She's never even heard them. That only really occurred to me as I was putting these notes together. I've always felt like she had heard them all many times, helped to edit them. In a way she did that. I wouldn't be the poet I am without her wise editing and the skill she brought to her own work - some of which you can hear here.

I reckon that's about all I wanted to say. I'm not going to write liner notes for each poem this time, better they speak for themselves. Some of them were given to the people who inspired them, some I just wrote for myself, to try to explain different relationships, different emotions.

Hope you enjoy.
